I’m very excited to present to you my new guitar album “Adivinanza de la guitarra” which will be released on 23rd March 2018.
The album includes three Renaissance vihuela works by Luis de Milán and Enríquez de Valderrábano, a classical work by Fernando Sor, a guitar transcription of Edvard Grieg’s romantic piano piece, two avant-garde works by Manuel de Falla and Reginald Smith Brindle and, finally, nine Andalusian folkloric/flamenco-style works by Ángel Barrios.
This extensive selection of works symbolises my personal interpretation of the great Spanish poet Federico García Lorca’s poem ‘Adivinanza de la guitarra (Riddle of the guitar)’ as a way to explore and celebrate the innermost beauty of the guitar.
Luis de Milán: Fantasía No. 8
The album opens with three vihuela pieces. This relaxing, cheerful and meditative vihuela music not only pleases the ear but also suggests the meaning of living life with music. The players in the Renaissance period played the vihuela not only for pleasure but also edification.
Ángel Barrios: Arroyos de la alhambra (Evocación):
Ángel Barrios Fernández (1882–1964) was a guitarist and composer of Granada, Spain. Barrios’s guitar music is a reflection of what he felt, heard and saw in his beloved Granada, the Alhambra.
The album includes some of the most exciting, spontaneous, sincere and beautiful guitar music by Ángel Barrios which takes listeners to a dreamy Granadian cityscape.
The included liner notes written by Mr Ismael Ramos, Granada's leading biographer of Ángel Barrios reveal valuable information about the works of this composer.
